John Bailey was actively involved in the life of the First Church in Rowley, one of the very early Massachusetts Bay congregations. He and his father, James, are mentioned in the records Essex County Court as disagreeing with the pastor in 1678. He and several others testified in open court about the "unbrotherly and unchristian carriage" of the Rev. Mr. Phillips.
